What does JHCN do for hospice patients and their families?
Rabbis trained in end-of-life care are able to provide a supportive presence and spiritual care to all Jews regardless of their level of affiliation. The Network also works together with the patient's Rabbi to support the Rabbi's efforts in providing this specialized care.
As part of the Peter & Esther Shifrin Lifelinks Program, a social worker helps identify and contact the myriad of resources available in the Jewish community. To learn more about the Lifelinks program, click here.
Because JHCN is closely affiliated with all of the major hospice care providers in Southeast Michigan, we are able to help each family assess its situation and consider the most appropriate options
Many terminally ill patients are not on hospice programs, either because they are not eligible or because they choose not to select this option. Through our palliative care program, these patients can access all the services JHCN offers.
Jewish Family Service provides the network with a specially-trained cadre of dedicated Jewish volunteers. These caring individuals complement the professional medical care offered by the hospice provider and extend the Jewish presence in the lives of our patients and their families.
JHCN monitors patient progress and advocates for terminally ill patients wherever they are in the healthcare system to ensure that no Jew ever feels alone.
When requested, JHCN helps with difficult end-of-life decisions including implementing hydration, respiration, tube feedings, therapy withdrawal, pain control and sedation. These interventions can be weighed from medical and Jewish perspectives so families feel prepared to make informed decisions.
In conjunction with Jewish Family Service, JHCN coordinates individualized bereavement services, including counseling by a Master's level therapist. We help with grief-related issues in an in-depth, personalized manner. To learn more about bereavement groups in our area, click here.
